Movie maker, Kunle Afolayan shone like a million stars at the third edition of the Africa Movie Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA 2015 as his political thriller, October 1 got nine awards out of 15 nominations. Kunle, garbed in a blue agbada, won two awards personally, Best Director and Best Movie 2015. Kehinde Bankole for her lead role in the political thriller got the Best Actress in Drama award. The Best Actor in Drama went to talented O.C. Ukeje out of two nominations. October 1 which won the most awards was followed by The Meeting with 5 awards. Linda Ejiofor won the Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Meeting. Incidentally, Tunda Babalola, mavewrick script writer scooped two awards, one for October 1 and The Meeting. Some of the categories like The Best Movie Award, New Era Award, Trail Blazer Award were enriched with a million naira and six-to-one year of free Amstel Malta supply, courtesy Nigeria Breweries PLC.

A Place in The Stars, the movie inspired by ex-NAFDAC DG, late Professor Dora Akunyili got an award. Antique, Verdict, Secret Room also got an award each. But it was a surprise that Invasion by veteran film director, Lancelot Oduwa-Imasuen could not win an award.

Great Anchors

IK Osakoduwa and Vimbai did a great job co-hosting the award night. It was another great delivery by the duo. IK noted for his dexterity and uncanny ability to connect to the audience has been doing this for the third season, anchoring other Multichoice Nigeria events. The duo sang, acted and ensured the event was near perfect. Basketmouth and a DR Congo comedian cracked ribs and the duo that performed separately delivered seamlessly and connected to the audience. Jenifa (Funke Akindele) also made the audience laugh while presenting an award. She was made to speak like Jenifa, her alter-ego by her co-presenter.

Sizzling Red Carpet

Exquisite, magnificence and posh describe the organization of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award, AMVCA 2015. With scores of paparazzi ever ready to take the next big shot, the award began with a red carpet by past 5pm. Denrele Edun stunned guests by wearing a woman’s dress- a white gown. Genevieve Nnaji, Mercy Johnson, Joselyn Dumas were stunning in their outfits.

Great Music

Marvin Crew ushered the audience into the frame of the award night with the performance of Dorobucci which was done without Marvin Crew first lady, Tiwa Savage who was reported to be on tour of East Africa. But the show must go on and fans, not doubt would have wanted something more apart from the signature tune of the Mavins.

Hip hop music star, Tu Face Idibia as usual hit it off with the mixed audience. Winner of Glo X Factor, DJ Switch was on the wheels of steel adding swag and sounds to the live band of Tu Baba. The award night was rounded off with P Square coming to serenade the audience and as expected the pop duo delivered with their Shekini and their collabo single originally FT Don Jazzy. Music flowed freely after the event ended by past 10pm and there was an after party where Kukere master, Inyanya, Bet Pickin crooner, Harrysong and Limpopo master, KCee with P Square entertained the winners who danced and wined into the early hours of the next day.

The organisers, Multichoice Nigeria reiterated its support for the movie industry across the continent. “We are glad to be part of the growth of the movie industry and we will continue to support the actors and movie makers who are bringing out good stories from Africa to the world and shaping how the world sees the continent. We will continue to get good content out of Africa and reward excellence,” Multichoice Nigeria MD, John Ugbe said.

AMVCA Winners Speak

It is like winning a billion dollar! I want to congratulate the organisers. I make bold to say that you guys have the biggest platform… Before I commence a project, I normally see the result of the movie and this propels me to get it done. My new project to begin soon is ‘The CEO’ and it is going to be big. Going forward, I want to go into TV drama series. I have done a TV series for the law school, Law School TV Series. TV is Money and the next thing for me is that I’m coming to TV series -Kunle Afolayan, double awardee, AMCA 2015.

It is harder making a film in Africa. A Place in The Stars took so many years in the making. This award represents encouragement for every film maker. Funding was done snail speed because producing A Place in The Stars was expensive. It took seven years to make the movie- Steve Gukas (Producer of A Place in the Star- Best Movie Drama)

17 years ago, I started acting in Nollywood, getting roles and paying the price up the ladder. Playing Clara Ikemba, a funny character in The Meeting was challenging and fun. Writing is a very lonely job, movie makers, producers should show writers the kind of respect and support we need to do a good job. 5 Days In Abuja, original name for the movie which turned to The Meeting by Mildred Okwo. Mildred did a good job. She’s an angel, a genius- Tunde Babalola (scriptwriter of October 1 & The Meeting).

Don’t come into the business (acting) because you are trying to win an award. It’s nice that we have a reward system that recognises excellence. After winning this award (AMVCA 2015 Best Actor), for me the next thing is to strategize and explore my options- O.C Ukeje (Best Actor AMVCA 2015)

More facts appear to be emerging on the allegation by Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that President Goodluck Jonathan gave pastors across the country N6bn to vote against the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in the presidential election.

A Borno-based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, said on Thursday that the money that was given to pastors by the President was actually N7bn and not N6bn asalleged by Amaechi, who doubles as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation.

Amaechi had alleged that unnamed leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party paid N6bn to Christian clerics to campaign against Buhari and the APC.

The governor’s allegation caused a stir among the Christian clerics, with the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and the Northern State Christian Elders Forum asking Amaechi to name the church leaders, who collected the huge bribe.

But Musa-Dikwa, who is the Executive Director of the Voice of Northern Christian Movement, told journalists in Kaduna on Thursday that the said money was channelled through the Christian Association of Nigeria.

He said the CAN got the said money(N7bn) on January 26, 2015 and disbursed N3m to each State Chairmen of the CAN across the country.

Musa-Dikwa, who was an Associate Pastor with the E. Y. N. Church, Farm Centre, Dikwa Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, under Rev. Emmanuel Kwajihe between 2002 and 2004, said the CAN had started threatening Christians in the state (Borno) that they must re-elect Jonathan in the rescheduled election.

He said, “It was N7bn that was given to the CAN leadership by President Goodluck Jonathan. They(CAN) later disbursed N3m to the State Chairmen of the CAN.

“The money was handed over to the CAN Leadership on 26th January, 2015.”

“Actually, President Jonathan is using CAN President, and it was the CAN President who collected the monies and shared N3m to the CAN executives in each state.

“And some Pentecostal Bishops also collected their share. Actually, the money is not N6bn, it is N7bn. This is what I know. One of the CAN officials from Abuja told me that they have collected the money. The corruption in CAN is terrible. They are corrupting the body of Christ because of money.

“They are now threatening Christians in Borno State that they will deal with anybody, who refuses to vote for Jonathan. And the CAN officials are now campaigning that if Buhari emerges President, he will Islamise Nigeria; and that Osinbajo collected monies from Islamic world; and that the same Osinbajo will resign soon after Buhari wins to give way for Tinubu to emerge Vice President.”

Musa-Dikwa named some high-profile clerics, who had benefitted from the controversial largesse to actualise the re-election bid of Jonathan.
