The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it will not participate in the ongoing electioneering public debates on national television and radio being organised by the Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria (BON) because of the unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme against the corporate political interest of the party and its candidates.
However, the organizers have made it clear that every participant will be exposed to the same set of questions that will give them the opportunity to enunciate their positions
The Director Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO), Garba Shehu, said in a statement on Thursday in Abuja that the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG)-powered debate was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, by wearing the toga of government control, especially being composed mainly of agencies and allies of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the BON, National Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Africa Independent Television (AIT), owned by a PDP chieftain. And going by the avalanche of inflammatory statements, misinformation and blatant lies being propagated by some of these media against our party and candidates contrary to the Kofi Annan-brokered Abuja Peace Accord, and the failure of these aggressors to desist and apologise, it has left the APC campaign with no option than to steer clear of any premeditated smear campaign that could be inimical to our prospective electoral success,” Shehu said.
The APCPCO spokesman further explained that the boycott by the “APC should not be seen as disrespect to Nigerian voters, or an alibi for the party to dodge public scrutiny; but it must be viewed as an honourable right not to consent to any activity that could distract, demean, denigrate or derail the fast-moving train of the party.
“The APC is a party of progressive intellectuals, genuine technocrats, successful businessmen and women, and most of all eminent and courteous people of honour who would never condescend to the level of sadistic gutter propaganda, all in the name of political exigency and crass opportunism,” Shehu said.
He noted that many government-controlled media had clipped the wings of APC promotional advertisements on one excuse on the other, adding that until a court upturned their decision recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) shutdown some telecoms portals for soliciting legitimate campaign funds from members of the public for APC.
“Aside, elements close to sitting President Goodluck Jonathan have commissioned series of derogatory and death threat advertorials against the person, family and associates of the opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari, to which the APC had sent letters of complaint to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department State Security (DSS), Advertisers Practitioners of Nigeria (APCON), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the erring media that published or aired such offensive adverts or documentaries.
“None of our letters of protest has been attended to by the authorities. So, whatever the incumbent president wants to do with the instrument of state to harass members of the opposition into humiliating submission will not work. The APC/Buhari campaign is now a people’s movement. The more they try to rubbish it, the more popular we are with the populace.
“We are not shadow-chasers or moonwalkers. The APC is concerned mainly with the lack of unity and security in Nigeria; plus the growing decimation of lives, property and territory of our great country due to preventable insurgency; the slumbering economy; decaying educational system; absence of jobs; poor public health; and the cancerous institutionalization of corruption in our national life. You can’t fool the people all the time. Nigerians will vote out their oppressors come February 14.”
Yola — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, described as wicked, the allegations that he was supporting the Boko Haram insurgency in the north eastern part of the country for political reasons.
Addressing a large crowd at the Ribadu Square where the Presidential rally took place, Jonathan said no sane leader would support insurgency of any type in a country that he presides over.
According to the president, his administration is totally committed to reclaiming all the territories being occupied by Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa State, noting that from the earlier five local governments being occupied by the terrorists, government forces have reclaimed some, including Michika which he said was reclaimed yesterday morning.
He said: “Some people have insinuated that I am behind Boko Haram and I say, may Allah forgive them. There is no human being that will be the leader of his country and instigate crisis. Why should I bring Boko Haram to Adamawa State?
“In 2011, I got 65 per cent of the votes in Adamawa State. How can any mad person insinuate that I am in support of Boko Haram for political reasons? God willing, we will recover all the remaining local governments and join you in redeveloping Adamawa State again.”
The president noted that he supported the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for the governorship position of the state because he will join governement in fighting insecurity in the country through his international contacts and exposure.
National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Muazu, who announced the lifting of the suspension on both the former national Chairman of the party, Bamanga Tukur as well as that of the exco of the state PDP enjoined the people of Adamawa State to vote for the PDP “because of what PDP has done and not what others have promised to do.”
The governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari who said the state had always belonged to the PDP promised that every stakeholder in the state will work towards delivering the state to the PDP.
Culled from PM News |
Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Thursday advised the APC presidential candidate, retired Maj.-Gen.Muhammadu Buhari, against committing suicide by planning to personally lead the war against Boko Haram terrorists, if elected president.
Sambo gave the advice at the PDP Presidential Rally in Yola, Adamawa.
The vice president said his advice was against the backdrop of the advice given to Buhari by his presidential running mate to personally lead the war against Boko Haram if elected President in next month’s presidential election.
Sambo urged Buhari to ignore the advice from the APC vice presidential candidate, adding that any attempt by Buhari to lead such war would amount to a “suicide mission” in view of his age.
According to him, the APC should allow President Jonathan to continue to adopt ”a more scientific and modern” warfare in tackling the menace of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“I want to seize this opportunity to draw our attention to a publication, last week, credited to the vice-presidential candidate of the APC that their plan is to ask their presidential candidate, retired Maj-Gen. Buhari, to lead the war against Boko Haram.
“I want to ask you a question, a retired 73-year-old General – can he run? No!
“Okay, let’s assume that he can run; how many metres can he run before he falls? The training of a General that retired in 1985 is it the same training that can address a modern war? No!
“Now we are fighting war with drones, with new ideas that our President, a PhD holder, a scientist that is using (his knowledge) to address the security issues of this country.
He described the paln as a suicidal proposal, asking “will he (Buhari) go with a suicidal proposal?”
The vice-president urged the electorate to support President Goodluck Jonathan, saying Jonathan was the answer to the nation’s security and the answer to its development.
Sambo reassured that the PDP-led administration would continue to do its best in addressing the nation’s security challenges across the country.
On the developmental efforts of administration, Sambo said that the President had earmarked funds for the completion of two hydro-power dams in Adamawa.
“I want to give you this good news that Mr President has approved the development and completion of Kiri Dam and Jada Dam.
“All these Dams will be provided with hydro-electricity power and an irrigation scheme, with which we are developing economic corridors in Adamawa state.
“In addition to that, in the transport sector, I have good news for you. Mr President has approved the dredging of River Benue.Very soon, we will have a river port and ships and boats from different parts of the world will be here in Yola.”
Sambo then urged the electorate in the state to ensure that they obtain their PVCs to enable them to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and all other PDP candidates in the February 14 and 28 general elections.
In his remarks, a chieftain of the PDP and a former Minister, Sen. Jubril Aminu, said Adamawa people had resolved to vote for Jonathana/Sambo ticket as well as other PDP candidates in the state during the February elections.
After his seeming endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan and then shortly afterwards the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), and promising to mobilise retired military generals to support the latter, former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on Thursday decided to be more generous with his support, saying that he endorses all 14 presidential candidates in the forthcoming election.
Babangida stated this during a talk show on Channels TV, adding that all the candidates had displayed passion for the unity of the country.
Asked by the presenter of the programme, Ms. Kadaria Ahmed, if he had thrown his weight behind Jonathan, Babangida said he alluded to it.
“I did allude to that. I said I found him as someone who has a very strong belief about the unity of this country.
“Those of us who fought the civil war and I still carry a bullet here as a permanent reminder in me, so anyone who talks about Nigeria’s unity, I get impassioned about it.
“So what I said is that the president believes in the unity of this country and any other person who believes in the unity of this country should support the president to keep the country one,” he said.
Continuing, Babangida said as far as the presidential election was concerned, all the 14 presidential candidates had his blessing.
“The only difference and I did mention it, is that I have not been able to read what they have to offer to this country and I am going to do that. Whoever offers what I was looking forward to I will cast my vote,” he said.
Babangida also spoke on the late Gen. Sani Abacha, saying that it never crossed his mind that his successor was going to seize power from the head of the interim government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, to whom he handed over power in 1993.
“It never crossed my mind that Abacha would overthrow the interim government, quite honestly, it never did. But when he executed the coup, it didn’t come to me as a surprise because all of you in this country gave him the wherewithal to do it. A coup always succeeds if there was a frustration in the society and that frustration was orchestrated.
“I governed for eight years using decree, that interim government was given a constitution and that constitution was supported by a law. So as far as I’m concerned, it was not illegitimate. It was legitimately done as it’s done in military governments all over the world,” he said.
He called on Nigerians and Muslims to stand up and fight against Boko Haram, saying that the group had carried out acts that are contrary to the tents of Islam.
“Nigerians have to mobilise against the Boko Haram and that will make it easy to win the war,” he said.
He added that he had no regret over anything he did during his regime but admitted that if there was anything he would have done differently, it would have been to include a provision for a two-party system in the Nigerian constitution.
The first part of D’Banj’s interview with Olisa Adibua was released a few days ago (click here if you missed it) and now the second part of the interview is out!
In the second part, available exclusively on Olisa.tv, D’Banj opens up about much more personal details including his debt rumours, working with Don Jazzy again, endorsing GEJ in 2011 and so much more.
The video is over 40 minutes but here are some of the topics covered in the chat.
- D’Banj said that Don Jazzy told him that whenever he hears his (D’Banj’s) voice on the radio he always changes the station, that statement, D’banj said, was very hurtful. It hurt him so bad that he left his house and sought refuge in a hotel and then moved on to South Africa
- He never expected Oliver Twist to be such a huge hit and was in South Africa when it blew up in London and he had to rush over there. He believes the song’s sudden success was God’s way of taking him away from all the drama back home in Nigeria
- The deal with Kanye West was not completed at this stage however Kanye was so impressed with the song that he agreed to make an appearance in the video. As Kanye is an ‘action man’ as D’Banj calls him, they shot the video straight away while still in London
- D’Banj knows that everyone wants him and Don Jazzy to work together again and thinks there is a possible of that happening, if the price is right. He bumped into Don Jazzy in America and they discussed the possibility of a reunion, a business reunion. Don Jazzy told him that it would have to be for the right money for that to ever happen.
- ‘A friend in need is a burglar in the future’ was D’banj response to Olisa’s question on if the duo would get back to being friends!
- In response to questions about his public support of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, D’Banj vehemently refuted suggestions that he had been paid for the interview. He stated that he had himself requested the interview and that he felt that it was the right thing for him to do as a man and citizen of Nigeria
- He admitted that he got paid, but for his work as a musician
- He felt that the backlash he got at that time was unfortunate as he was put through ‘heat, fire and hell’.
- He wouldn’t be tied down to answering whether he would do the same again this time round as he is ‘unavailable’ right now and travels a lot.
- The conversation between D’Banj and Olisa became very heated when Olisa started questioning D’Banj on the state of his career since Oliver Twist
- He strongly denied allegations that he did not write Top of the World and said it was a big hit which he really loves and questioned Olisa on who determines what makes a big hit anyway and if his show is The Lie not The Truth
- D’Banj insisted that he had had great success since leaving Mo’Hits. He won awards, traveled the world, had the highest downloaded song in 2013 and reached the point where he wanted to expand and do something new. He made clear that that just because he hasn’t been spending all his time in Nigeria doesn’t mean that he has not been successful
- Denied that his new song ‘Feeling the Nigga’ was written for Akon and that he made a cameo appearance in it. Said that Akon is in the remix and that they are both his songs. D’Banj became very irate at Olisa’s insinuations and threatened to walk out of the interview if he didn’t admit that the song was his
- Olisa asked what happened with D’Banj’s Koko mobile phone and why it hasn’t been seen in the market but he refused to go into this topic in any depth. He said that the phone sold out and hinted at a deal with Apple which he cannot talk much about due to contractual limitations
- He also has a deal with Beat’s by Dre and the headphones will be released soon (hopefully by Easter) in Africa
- Olisa asked D’Banj about the various rumours, allegations and court actions against him claiming that he has unpaid debts amongst other things. D’Banj said that he has been advised by lawyers to not speak about this in detail but made it very clear that he doesn’t owe anybody any money
- Financially, the past two years have been some of his best years, despite Olisa trying to allege that he has not been successful during this time
- He dismissed the people that have left him and no longer want to work with him and said that the people that left were not meant to be there in the first place
- He revealed that he had recently had a friend/business associate arrested because he found out that one of his investments was mismanaged to the cost of around $2m. The person had gone behind his back and committed fraud but said the police is now dealing with the matter. He advised young people who are going into business to be very careful with documents and make sure that all papers are always properly signed
- He refused to answer any questions about women or his personal relationships as it has gotten him in too much trouble in the past and also refused to give a clear-cut answer as to whether he had a relationship with Genevieve
- January 31 there will be a release party in Lagos for his 10 year anniversary and other celebrations will take place across the world. The celebrations will take the form of parties in clubs and concerts. Following the party in Lagos there will be a celebration in February in Dubai, then South Africa, Malaysia and London and it will finish in December with a Koko concert
- Olisa got him to apologise for the debacle that was his KOKO Concert, which held at Eco Atlantic in 2012.

My most embarrassing fashion moment was when I was a part of a dance group in university. As I was dancing on stage my pants ripped and I had to pretend I was dancing away even though I was really just trying to hide my split I’m my pants!

I had a pair of pants that ripped right under my butt, lol. I guess I gained a few in the right places, and my pants were not having that (Laughs).

Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), withdrew from the presidential debate organised by Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) on Thursday citing bias for President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) has now presented both men with another opportunity to face off.
Announcing Buhari’s withdrawal, Garba Shehu, directorate of media and publicity of the APC presidential campaign organisation, explained that the boycott was due to the “unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme, against the corporate political interest of the party (APC) and its candidates”.
Shehu argued that the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) powered debate was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, by wearing the toga of government control, especially being composed mainly of agencies and allies of the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration.
“A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), National Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Africa Independent Television (AIT, owned by a PDP chieftain),” he said.
But on Friday, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF), in partnership with CNBC Africa, Forbes Africa and BusinessDay, announced its plans to host the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the two frontline political parties, APC and PDP, to live debates to present their proposed agenda to the electorate.
The MMF ‘2015 Presidential Election Debates’ will feature Architect Namadi Sambo, Jonathan’s running mate and his APC counterpart, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) in the first leg, while Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari will go head-to-head in the second leg,
Both debates are scheduled to hold in Abuja, on February 8, 2015.
“The debates have been expressly designed to elevate the level of political discourse in our country, enhance participatory democracy as well as re-focus attention on national growth and development during this election period,” Mrs. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, chief executive officer of the foundation said.
“We believe, at this point in time, that our people should focus more on issues-based election and critically scrutinise potential leaders before making up their minds on who they will vote for.
“We, along with our partners, see this debate as a platform for the candidates to present their programmes so the electorate would make their choice on whom to vote for in the elections. The need for a debate is non-negotiable given that the development of democracy in Nigeria has increased voter sophistication.”
Frederic Van de vyver, executive director of CNBC West Africa, said the debates would attempt to address the major economic issues facing Nigeria.
“We look forward to conducting a robust debate on the major economic and business issues facing Africa’s largest economy on the eve of one of the most important elections since the end of military rule in 1999,” he said.
During the debates, the candidates will be asked to outline their general vision and development agenda for Nigeria on six thematic areas of education, health, security, job creation, economy, governance, the rule of law and foreign policy.
The debates will provide opportunity for candidates to spend quality time with potential voters, as well as offer them a collegial, conducive and credible platform to showcase their agenda for national development.
